Malignant Astrocytomas - Anaplastic astrocytomas
|
Anaplastic astrocytomas present a decade later with a mean age of 45 years. Headaches and altered mentation are present in 50-70% of patients, with 60% showing signs of hemiparesis. The more malignant nature of these tumors is reflected in the shorter duration of symptoms before diagnosis (6-24 mos). The safety and extent of resection has been increased in recent years with technological advances such as combined stereotactic localization and intraoperative functional mapping of language, motor and sensory areas. Radiation therapy will slow progression and chemotherapy, while variable effective, is generally recommended for younger, more functional patients. Median survival is 3-5 years. |
